So, I was previously debating what route I would take for upgrading my rear differential and axle setup here. After much deliberation, and a stroke of luck, I decided to get an early model FJ Cruiser axle with e-locker.
When browsing eBay, I found an assembly for sale that included shipping. On a whim, I asked for a lower price and it was taken! I really couldn’t have asked for a better price. This axle is a NY state axle though, so it does have some rust on it, but it was guaranteed to have a functioning e-locker actuator. I plan on cleaning it up and coating it with some Eastwood products that I’ve had a good experience with. First I’ll clean it up with a wire brush, and hit it with rust converter in the heavier spots. Then I’ll coat it with encapsulator to prevent future rust. After that, a few coats of the extreme chasis paint to make it look pretty.
Since I’m in no particular hurry to get the assembly swapped, I’ll send the diff over to East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS) to be rebuilt while I’m refinishing the axle housing and for good measure, I’ll replace the axle seals while I’m at it. I’ll probably just drop my whole axle out and roll it out from underneath then while it’s up on jack stands take the brakes off to place on the “new” assembly.
The nice thing about finding the whole assembly is that I now either have extra axles, or I can sell it and recoup my cost of the e-locker. Hoping to get the assembly in the next week. Stay tuned, progress pics to come!
